Volunteer Profiles: Flavien Mabit and Meghan Cross

It’s National Volunteer Week, and we’re celebrating the time, talent, and energy local volunteers share to strengthen the fabric of our communities.

Flavien Mabit

Flavien volunteers with Gwaii Trust as an alternate director for Area E (Sandspit/K’il Kuun Llnagaay – Moresby Island), and at our AGM on June 17th he will be appointed as director, replacing long-serving volunteer, Laurie Chisholm, who will be stepping into the alternate role.

Originally from France, and now also a Canadian Citizen, Flavien has been living on Haida Gwaii since 2010. He is the owner of the Bayview Garden Guesthouse in K’il Kuun/Sandspit. He is involved in various community projects, mainly through the Sandspit Community Society. In his spare time, he likes to sail, camp, kayak and explore the world by bicycle.

Thanks for being a part of our team, Flavien!

Meghan Cross

Many of you know Meghan as our project officer, but did you also know she’s a volunteer firefighter?

Organization: Daajing Giids Volunteer Fire Department

Volunteer Role: Firefighter

How long have you been a volunteer firefighter?

I joined the department in October 2016, so have been a member for about 6.5 years.

Is there an experience or moment that stands out?

Responding to calls and putting our training into action is the thing that stands out the most for me. I could never have imagined that I would be a first responder!

What has volunteering meant to you?

It’s been great to give back to the community and learn some new skills along the way.

We’re always looking for new members. If you are interested in joining, please come down to the fire hall in Daajing Giids on Tuesdays at 7PM
