Bridging the way along GuuhlGa Siiwaay K’iiwaay the Spirit Lake Trail

The Skidegate Band Council has received a 2025 Major Contributions Grant of $47,291 to build a new bridge on the beloved Spirit Lake Trail, an important step toward preserving a trail that holds deep cultural and ecological significance to the Haida Nation.

Spirit Lake Trail is a place where local plant medicines grow, culturally modified trees stand tall, and T’am Gaandlaay – one of Skidegate’s only fish creeks – flows strong. It’s where community members reconnect with the land, gather berries, and reflect on generations of Haida knowledge and stewardship. The new bridge will be constructed using cultural wood and local labour, replacing a deteriorating structure and ensuring safe access for years to come. This investment will strengthen the trail’s accessibility, cultural vitality, and economic value for the region.
