Appointed by the Council of the Haida Nation, Ḵ’aayhlt’aa Haanas Valine Brown has joined the Gwaii Trust Society as a Director for Old Massett. Raised in Masset, Valine is an ‘aaw, k’aawas eagle, humbled gardener, and aspiring weaver. Her academic and advocacy work has centered around environmental and human rights, Indigenous title, and in the past several years, her efforts have turned to uplifting Indigenous rights within the philanthropic sector across so-called canada.
Through Athlii Gwaii: Upholding Haida Law on Lyell Island (2018), Valine was able to learn more about the history of Athlii Gwaii and the creation of the Gwaii Trust Society, through Haida voices and narratives. She’s inspired by the many community and elected leaders whose efforts steward Haida Gwaii – past and present – and the passion and vision that created the Gwaii Trust Society.
She’s honoured to contribute to this powerful, rights-based legacy by serving on the board of directors.
