Your Guide to the Food Sovereignty Grant Application

Are you passionate about improving food security and sustainability on Haida Gwaii? Do you have an idea to boost local food production or foster community knowledge about food systems?

If so, the Food Sovereignty Grant could help bring your vision to life!

Interested? Here’s everything you need to know to apply.

The Food Sovereignty Grant Process

  1. Applications Open (6 weeks before deadline)
    • Ready to apply? You’ll need a clear plan for your project, an estimate of your costs, and any other sources of funding you have.
  2. Submit Your Application (Deadline: March 1, 2026, by 11:59 PM)
  3. Review and Decision (Approximately 2 Months)
    • After the deadline, the Gwaii Trust Board will review your application and make funding decisions. You’ll hear back within two months.
  4. Approval and Next Steps
    • If your project is approved, review the terms, track your expenses, and wait until at least two months after the application deadline to start your project.
  5. Complete Your Project
    • Once you’ve completed your project, submit your final budget, receipts, photos, and a brief summary of what you achieved. We’d love to see the difference your project makes for the people of Haida Gwaii.

FAQs

Yes, there are a few simple requirements to keep in mind:

  • Your organization must be a local non-profit or local government. Businesses and individuals are not eligible to apply.
  • If you’ve received a grant before, make sure you’ve submitted all required reports—organizations with overdue reports can’t apply.
  • To see if your project is a good fit, think about whether it helps the cultural, economic, or environmental well-being of Haida Gwaii. Gwaii Trust focuses on:
    • Promoting – cultural and economic health
    • Encouraging – local decision-making
    • Improving – community well-being
    • Supporting – education and artistic expression
    • Fostering – cooperation, understanding and trust
    • Creating – jobs and improving infrastructure
    • Conserving – land, marine ecosystems, and archaeological sites
    • Conducting – research on Haida Gwaii’s environment and history
    • Planning – for a sustainable economy
    • Providing – services where no municipal government exists
  • If your project helps with any of these goals, it’s probably a great fit!

There are a few things the Food Sovereignty Grant won’t cover. You can’t use the grant for:

  • General operating costs or funding for ongoing programs.
  • Buying perishable or non-perishable foods.
  • Costs incurred before grant approval.
  • Other items mentioned in the General Grant Guidelines
